Statement from the Board of Education

At the June 6, 2019 meeting of the Board of Education of the Floral Park-Bellerose Elementary School District, Dr. Michael Dantona, Superintendent, announced that he will be leaving the district effective August 31, 2019. The Board of Education understands the important role of a superintendent. The superintendent acts as the chief administrator and is the head academic leader of any school district. Over the past two years, the district underwent an extensive superintendent search with the help of a professional search firm. Just this past year, Trustee Laura Ferone and Trustee Douglas Vigo participated in a national superintendent search to replace Dr. Ralph Ferrie, Superintendent of Schools of the Sewanhaka Central High School District. In addition, the New Hyde Park-Garden City Park School District and the Franklin Square School District each completed similar searches over the past two years. The Board of Education has a strong knowledge of the talent pool available for school districts. The Board also recognizes the talent lying within our own extended district family and therefore opted to forego a formal outside search.

The candidate who will be appointed has a long and esteemed record as an educator. In the past two years, this applicant not only obtained a position as an Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction but demonstrated herself as a highly effective administrator in that capacity. After an intense interview process, including verification of multiple references, this Board hosted a community “Meet & Greet” whereby leaders and parents throughout the community were invited to come, ask questions and share ideas. The Board also made sufficient time for this candidate to visit each of our two elementary schools. This candidate toured both properties and met with administrators and teachers, including representatives of the Teachers’ Union. The feedback on this candidate has been positive from both the staff and community alike.

The Board of Education of the Floral Park-Bellerose Elementary School appointed Dr. Kathleen Sottile as the next Superintendent of Schools effective September 1, 2019. Dr. Kathleen Sottile began her career as the owner and teacher of a nursery school. She then went on to become an elementary school music teacher and an Assistant Principal of a junior high school. Dr. Sottile moved to New York and was appointed Principal of the Floral Park Memorial High School where she served for twelve years. Two years ago, she was appointed to Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction at the Sewanhaka Central High School District where she has met much success. Dr. Sottile has a proven, positive, and successful track record in each of these positions.

Dr. Sottile is a bright, state of the art educator who has figured out how to meld high standards, new curriculum, new teaching techniques, use of technology, along with input from community, staff and parents resulting in a positive, highly successful school whereby students are able to meet success. Dr. Sottile understands the importance of fostering a positive and safe school environment and one conducive to learning. She also has grasped the important balance of being inclusive to the community and families alike. The Board is confident that she is not only an appropriate choice but certainly amongst the best of educational leaders out there. It is the Board’s great privilege to announce the appointment of Dr. Kathleen Sottile, Superintendent of the Floral Park-Bellerose Elementary School District effective September 1, 2019.
